Three Things About: Friends With Kids
Take the main players from Bridesmaids [Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudoplh & Chris O’Dowd], throw in writer/director Jennifer Westfeldt [who also happens to be Jon Hamm’s other half], and then cast the adorable Adam Scott as your leading man. Sounds like a recipe for success, right? Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me…
01. It’s quite a feat to write, direct and star in a film – especially alongside such brilliant comedy actors – so I have to give Jennifer Westfeldt some credit. However, the story was rather predictable rom-com fare, and I really didn’t like the emphasis on raising a child within a traditional family unit. In this day and age, do we really need to worry about whether or not a kid can handle their parents not living together?
02. After watching the past two seasons of Parks & Recreation, I just can’t buy Adam Scott as a shallow arsehole who cares more about the contents of a woman’s bra than her brain. Maybe that’s just because I’ve grown very attached to the character of Ben Wyatt, but either way, I found it difficult to understand Jason’s motives in the film.
03. Whoever decided Chris O’Dowd should fake an American accent needs to be shot. Firstly, because it was inconsistent and weird, and secondly, because his Irish lilt is so incredibly charming. Why take it away from him [and me]?
