There’s Nothing Dandy About… Horrible Histories

Horrible Histories – “Dick Turpin”

Over the past month or so, I’ve found myself drawn into the world of BBC children’s series Horrible Histories.  Based on the books by Terry Deary, the show uses skits and musical numbers to teach kids about the past.  This may sound quite lame, but it’s actually a really fun piece of television.  With a strong central cast, featuring the likes of Mathew Baynton [Deano from Gavin & Stacey] and Simon Farnaby [who played various roles in The Mighty Boosh, and starred in Bunny and the Bull], the show is clearly inspired by the works of Monty Python, and while it might be primarily aimed at children, it’s something that people of all ages can enjoy.

Take the above clip, for example, with Mat Baynton playing the role of highwayman Dick Turpin.  An obvious parody of Adam Ant’s “Stand and Deliver” [with reference to “Prince Charming”], the song is not only funny and educational – it’s also really catchy.

Horrible Histories airs several times a week on ABC2, and some episodes are available on iView.  If you like comedy, do check it out.  You’ll find yourself singing along in no time.
