“It’s Chriiiiiiiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaaas!!!”

I’ve mentioned my dislike of Christmas several times before.  I know that a lot of people just can’t get their heads around how I could possibly hate this time of year [at least Lizzy understands], but it’s really just not my cup of tea.  Christmas is filled with overwhelming expectations.  There’s no possible way to please everyone, and something always goes horribly wrong.  Also, I spent several holiday seasons working the refunds desk at Target, so this time of year brings back memories of ungrateful customers and long queues.  And yelling.  Lots of yelling.

With all of that said, however, there are still a few things that I do actually like about Christmas, and the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special is one of them.  The above clip, especially, captures the joy I feel when I watch this episode.  I’ve seen it so many times now that I sing along when Smithy answers his phone: “At Christmas time, it’s hard, but when you’re having fun – GAVALAR!!!”  There’s something so very relatable about it all; they’ve managed to capture the real Christmas experience – petty drama, unnecessary arguments, and an obligation to spend the day with family whether you actually want to or not.

If you don’t already own the entirety of Gavin and Stacey on DVD [it’s okay, I forgive you], the Christmas Special is currently available to be watched on iView.  And, if like me, you hate Christmas, maybe it’ll help you feel a bit better about it all.  Or maybe it’ll make you hate it even more.  It’s hard to tell, sometimes.
