Oh Manchester, So Much to Answer For

Picadilly Records in Manchester

As a fan of The Smiths and Oasis, it was inevitable that I’d end up in Manchester during my brief stopover in the UK in February.  Not only did I want to visit the home town of the Gallagher brothers, but I also wanted to visit some of the shooting locations from Life on Mars.

Manchester is a great city, quite different to what I was expecting, and the soundtrack to my three night stay was varied and eclectic.  An example of this would be the music that Rachana and I found ourselves enjoying at a rather nondescript pub on Picadilly.  Inspired by this visit, I’d like to present you with the following playlist:

Selected titles from the playlist of a pub in Manchester
7th February, 2011

01.   Elbow – “Grounds for Divorce”
02.  Avril Lavigne – “Mobile”
03.  Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
04.  Kylie Minogue – “Breathe”
05.  Santana feat. Rob Thomas – “Smooth”
06.  Garbage – “Stupid Girl”
07.  Blue – “All Rise”
08.  Roxy Music – “Jealous Guy”
09.  Damien Rice – “The Blower’s Daughter”
10.  Blur – “Coffee + TV”
11.  INXS – “Disappear”
12.  Nine Inch Nails – “Closer”
13.  Soundgarden – “Black Hole Sun”
14.  Beastie Boys – “Sabotage”
15.  Rage Against the Machine – “Killing in the Name”
16.  Justin Timberlake – “Cry Me a River”
17.  Dido – “White Flag”
18.  The Killers – “Mr Brightside”

Aside from Justin Timberlake and Blue, you could almost be excused for thinking that they’d taken my iPod and put it on shuffle.  Funnily enough, I didn’t hear any Morrissey or Oasis the whole time I was there.
