Monday Mixtape #5: Hang the DJ
Every second friday, Mr McClelland’s Finishing School takes place at Trades Hall. 10pm-3am, $8 on the door; it’s a club night like no other [details here and here]. Last week, in Mr McClelland’s absence, Mr Nick Caddaye, Ms Leah Collins and I were let loose behind the decks. I played two sets, as follows:
ONE
01. “Henrietta” – The Fratellis
Costello Music, 2006
02. “Rebel Rebel” – David Bowie
Diamond Dogs, 1974
03. “Buttons” [CSS Remix] – Sia
04. “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” – The Wombats
A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation, 2007
05. “Standing On My Neck” – Splendora
In the Grass, 1995
[In case you didn’t already know, this is the Daria theme song]
06. “You Made Me Like It” – 1990s
Cookies, 2006
07. “Pump It Up” – Elvis Costello
This Year’s Model, 1978
08. “Our Velocity” – Maxïmo Park
Our Earthly Pleasures, 2007
09. “Girl From Mars” – Ash
1977, 1995
[This is a Finishing School staple, one that you’d hear most weeks]
10. “Drumming Song” – Florence + the Machine
Lungs, 2009
11. “Only Happy When It Rains” – Garbage
Garbage, 1995
12. “Semi-Charmed Life” – Third Eye Blind
Third Eye Blind, 1997
TWO
01. “Miss Freelove ’69” – Hoodoo Gurus
Kinky, 1991
[This set is a little different to what I’d normally play. This song, for example, I played because Mr Nick played Paul Kelly’s “Dumb Things” – something you wouldn’t expect at Finishing School – and the crowd quite liked it. Also, Robyn once had a dream that she heard this song at FS]
02. “Gangsta’s Paradise” – Coolio
Gangsta’s Paradise, 1995
03. “Rosanna” – Toto
Toto IV, 1982
04. “Finding Out True Love Is Blind” – Louis XIV
The Best Little Secrets Are Kept, 2005
05. “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)” – Florence + the Machine
Lungs, 2009
06. “What Do I Have To Do?” – Kylie Minogue
Rhythm Of Love, 1991
[Playing Kylie was a bit of a risk, but it seemed to go down quite well. I was pleased]
07. “This Charming Man” – The Smiths
The Smiths, 1984
[Another FS staple. I chose this one to regain my credibility after playing Kylie]
08. “Charmless Man” – Blur
The Great Escape, 1996
[What a back-to-back, eh?]
09. “Where’s Me Jumper?” – Sultans of Ping
Casual Sex in the Cineplex, 1993
[This song was played at FS many moons ago, by an intriguing guest DJ, and was stuck in my head for weeks afterwards. Some clever googling by Robyn led us to the Sultans of Ping. Strange, but awesome]
Très bonnes choses.
