LIVE REVIEW: Spoon – April 30th, Billboard the Venue

Three things that I learnt at Spoon’s gig at Billboard on Friday night:
01. You can’t judge someone purely based on their performance in an episode of Veronica Mars. Britt Daniel had a guest role in series two, performing a karaoke version of Elvis Costello’s “Veronica”. It was quite weird, and after that, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when seeing them live. Verdict: not so weird. Good, in fact.
02. Spoon have a lot of songs. They’ve been around since 1994, and have released seven albums. Their set was quite understated at the beginning, but as the audience warmed up, so did the song choices. Highlights included “I Turn My Camera On” and “I Summon You”. They almost weren’t going to play “You Got Yr Cherry Bomb”, but chose to during the encore, after the crowd kept calling out for it. I would’ve been quite disappointed if they’d left that one out. The night closed with “Written In Reverse”.
03. On average, Spoon fans are quite tall. We encountered some interesting people in the crowd, from the lovely Soleil, to the passive-aggressive ribbon haters standing behind us. People remained fairly subdued, and not many seemed to know the words, but they all appeared to be enjoying themselves.
