Just some of the statistics that didn’t make it into our Hottest 100 infographic

By now you’ve probably seen the Hottest 100 of the Past 20 Years Results Infographic that was posted here on Monday.  If not, take a look.  I compiled the statistics, but the credit really goes to Glenn, who took my numbers and turned them into something quite wonderful.

While we were putting the infographic together, I came up with all sorts of different statistics, not all of which ended up in the final product.  So, today I thought I’d share with you some of the stats that were omitted.

Songs with questions in the title [1]:
#68. Jet – “Are You Gonna Be My Girl

Songs with names that kind of make reference to body parts [7]:
#4. Hilltop Hoods – “The Nosebleed Section”
#12. Gotye – “Hearts A Mess”
#25. Smashing Pumpkins – “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” [Are wings a body part?  I think that this may have been the reason that this category was left out…]
#28. Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Scar Tissue”
#32. Tool – “Stinkfist”
#46. Nick Cave – “Into My Arms”
#63. Grinspoon – “Chemical Heart”

Songs with titles that are somewhat vaguely relevant to architecture, but not really [7]:
#1. Oasis – “Wonderwall”
#34. Ben Folds Five – “Brick”
#39. Nirvana – “Heart Shaped Box”
#73. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros – “Home”
#79. Arctic Monkeys – “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”
#90. Silverchair – “Straight Lines”
#98. Jebediah – “Leaving Home”

Past #2s [from yearly Hottest 100 polls] that didn’t make it into the countdown [8]:
1993. Radiohead – “Creep” [although technically this was ineligible, which causes some confusion, but I’m not going to rant about that here]
1999. Killing Heidi – “Weir”
2000. U2 – “Beautiful Day”
2004. Missy Higgins – “Scar”
2005. Ben Lee – “Catch My Disease”
2006. Eskimo Joe – “Black Fingernails, Red Wine”
2009. Art vs Science – “Parlez Vous Français?”
20010. Little Red – “Rock It”

Songs that were #1 singles in Germany [4]:
[I didn’t comb through 20 years of German singles charts for nothing, damn it]
#9. Gotye – “Somebody That I Used to Know”
#33. The Cranberries – “Zombie”
#85. Coolio – “Gangsta’s Paradise”
#99. Lana Del Rey – “Video Games”
