“…and he goes boom, he goes boom.”

What’s your favourite episode? It’s such a cliched question, I know, but when you invest such time and consideration into a show like Ashes to Ashes, it’s a question which is bound to have a response.

I don’t like picking favourites. There are so many moments that stand out to me, and after that scene [you know the one] in 3×07, it’s hard to think of anything that could top it. But after a little bit of thought, one episode kept coming back to me: 1×06.

[Don’t remember it? Check Ian Wylie’s excellent review here]

I’ll preface this by saying that I don’t think this episode is perfect, by any means. The script isn’t flawless – I mean, confusing “Chas” for “cheers”? – but there are many elements in this episode that showcase some of the best things about Ashes to Ashes.

Gene having a hunch, which [of course] turns out to be correct – but not before he second-guesses himself and has to be convinced by Alex. Donny’s birthday “party” at Luigis. The brilliant climax – complete with 80s soundtrack gold [“Vienna” – Ultravox].
